Thursday September 6 is the launch of the festival that is really about movies - the celebrities are just a bonus, and ending on September 16, 2012. What am I saying, for Toronto it's about the stars coming to Canada! Much of our city will be deserted as people line up for tiff tickets, huddle for hours or days around the tiff red carpets or fill the theatres as they watch the movies that make up this year's film festival.
Waiting hours before the red carpet event
The film Looper opens the Festival while Canadian filmmaker Matt Sadowski (wrote, directed, edited and co-produced) short film The Tape will premier as part of the Short Cuts Canada program on Wednesday September 12 at the tiff Bell Lightbox (6pm). “Growing up as a filmmaker from Toronto, there is no higher benchmark for me than to have a film selected to play at TIFF,” said Sadowski. “It’s always a great challenge to tell a meaningful story in a short period of time, so my job as a filmmaker is to ensure there is an emotional payoff.”
Another tiff premier of Canadian talent will feature Montreal actor Emily Hampshire in My Akward Sexual Adventure, written and produced by Jonas Chernick and directed by Sean Garrity. The movie starts at 7pm on Tuesday September 11 at the Scotiabank Theatre. Emily plays the female lead who helps a reserved accountant to gain some experience in the sack in an effort to win back his ex-girlfriend.
“Shooting My Awkward Sexual Adventure was quite the remarkable experience for me. This was a gift of a role and working with Sean Garrity changed me as an actor. I’m thrilled the film is premiering at TIFF,” said Hampshire. "I am really excited to screen it with an audience."
This year tiff will also feature an exhibition called Designing 007: 50 Years of Bond from October 26 to January 20. "After 50 years of popularity, the James Bond franchise continues to entertain and intrigue audiences around the world.Designing 007: Fifty Years of Bond Style, focuses on the distinctly British luxuriance of the world's most iconic movie brand. Organised by the Barbican Centre, London, in partnership with EON Productions, the innovative exhibition examines one of the most significant film and cultural icons of all time, and Bond’s influence on art, music, lifestyle, automotive design, travel, technology and fashion. The exhibition that will have its North American premiere at TIFF Bell Lightbox, running from October 26, 2012 to January 20, 2013. Signature Bond items to be featured in the exhibition include the steel teeth worn by Richard “Jaws” Kiel in The Spy Who Loved Me (1997); the Anthony Sinclair overcoat worn by Sean Connery in Dr. No (1962); the poker table from Casino Royale (2006); and multiple gadgets from Q Branch."
The parties that go on are probably more important for Toronto than the actual films. Now that the Trump International Hotel and Tower has opened in our city their STOCK Restaurant Bar and Lounge will be serving gallons of Dom Perignon champagne to the famous and the beautiful. If you don't like the Perignon you can chug some Ace of Spades Brut or Rose or even the Cristal Brut that Master Sommelier John Szabo has stocked the bar with.
“I love Champagne, a feeling I’d like to share with as many people as possible. To make that happen, we offer an exceptional range of top brands and limited production, hand-crafted grower Champagnes at STOCK Restaurant,” said John Szabo, Master Sommelier and Wine Director for STOCK Restaurant. ”There’s a style for everyone, and a perfect pairing for every dish on our menu. Or, sit comfortably in the lounge while sipping a glass of top bubbly and enjoy the star gazing.”
