Love on the Islands

Far to the south of downtown is the #Toronto Island chain which, if my geography is correct, lies just to the north of the Bahamas. Most know the islands for the ferry destinations of Hanlan's Point, Centre Island and Ward's Island. Having made the adventurous journey across the harbour a young couple stand waist deep in the waters of Lake Ontario in front of the waterfront skyline of Toronto. It's hard not to be in love on the Islands, you have to take the love boat over (also known as a ferry with its 15 minute ride), the warm sands of numerous beaches kiss your soul while bikes and bikinis fill the many paths and boardwalks.

You can always bring your bikes on the Ward's and Hanlan's ferry, while bikes are restricted on the Centre Island ferry on weekends and holidays. If you don't have a bike you can rent them at the pier on the south side of the islands. They have some bikes that look like pedal cars.

The few residential cottages on the islands are all that remain of a peak of over 600 homes in the1950's when Metro Toronto decided to replace the houses with parkland. Several legal and public battles followed with demolitions reducing the houses to just over 200 until in 1980 the Ontario Government allowed residents to acquire 99 year leases.
