The governments media release says “Moreover, the Iranian regime has shown blatant disregard for the Vienna Convention and its guarantee of protection for diplomatic personnel. Under the circumstances, Canada can no longer maintain a diplomatic presence in Iran. Our diplomats serve Canada as civilians, and their safety is our number one priority. Diplomatic relations between Canada and Iran have been suspended."
The Toronto Coalition to Stop the War had a rally and march on Saturday October 6 to plead "Don't attack Iran!" Meeting at 2pm at Queen's Park the smallish group of protesters then planned to march to Trinity St Paul's to discuss why Harper cut ties to Iran.
The coalition said "The recent decision by the Harper government to sever all diplomatic relations with Iran represents a dangerous escalation of an already tense situation. Instead of pursuing dialogue and a peaceful resolution, Harper has chosen a path that could quickly lead to war."
