Variety, the spice of life

I sit here with a pain in my knee waiting to go into #Toronto for all the wonderful events that are planned for today - the Bloor-Yorkville Holiday Magic (with singer Matt Dusk), the 100th Grey Cup Festival and the Cavalcade of Lights at City Hall. You can catch my coverage of these events a little later on today or tomorrow, until then here are a variety of shots for your viewing pleasure. One of my favourite places to go into is Brookfield Place on Bay Street - they almost always have something cool going on.

#Toronto Roller Derby: Block'n Roll all night

Pump up the Jammers and let the action begin as the @TORollerDerby straps on their skates for the semi-final battle in the ladies flat track roller derby on Saturday August 25, 2012.

The ToRD stands at the Bunker in Downsview Park will be full of cheering fans as the full contact sport brings out two games in this special double header night of action. First up at 6pm is an International game with the Death Track Dolls against the Nickel City Knockouts from Buffalo, New York. The second bout starts at 8pm and features the Gore-Gore Rollergirls (Toronto's savage sweethearts on wheels) against the Smoke City Betties competing to go into the finals against defending champions Chicks Ahoy.
Doors open at 5pm and tickets are $18 at the door (buy in advance and save $6!). You can pick up a slice of pizza at the track and enjoy some adult beverages in the licensed arena. Beside stand seating you can bring your folding chairs and blankets.
"The Toronto Roller Derby League is an independently founded organization, 100% owned and operated by the skaters and referees. Established in 2006, the league is now comprised of four home teams: the Gore-Gore Rollergirls, the Smoke City Betties, the Chicks Ahoy!, the Death Track Dolls, farm team the D-VAS, and two travel teams; the Bay St. Bruisers and the all-star CN-Power."

Clam Slam 2012

Pride usually goeth before the fall, in this case Pride happens with the fall! #Toronto @TORollerDerby shows the colours as the all queer roller derby event takes place at the Bunker on Friday, June 29, 2012. The bout is an official Pride Toronto event that will feature plenty of falls, slams, blocks and most definitely some bruising - falls come with a price dontchaknow.

"Clam Slam is the annual Pride week face off between Vagine Regime Canada and the Clam Diggers; both teams comprised of skaters from various leagues across North America! Clam Slam happens Friday June 29th, at The Bunker, Downsview Park. If you are interested in skating in Clam Slam, please contact the organizers at clamdiggers09@gmail.com. Tickets will be on sale online and in stores later this week."

Tara's Stunning Tattoos Represent Clarity and Freedom

I was riding my bike along the water and the Belt Parkway in South Brooklyn last month, when a woman passed me on her roller skates, headed in the other direction.

I quickly reversed directions and caught up with her because I wanted to ask her about her half-sleeve:

It's really quite stunning, and I was interested in who was the artist responsible for this work. Tara credited Christian Masot at Silk City Tattoo in Hawthorne, New Jersey. I've seen a lot of cool stuff come out of the shop and Christian was responsible for the work on the last two people I've met having been inked there. Check out all the Silk City work that has appeared previously on Tattoosday here.

As for Tara, she's a Roller Derby Girl, who skates under the handle PMA, with the number 24/7,  because she has a Positive Mental Attitude, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

She explained, "I was going through a lot of stuff in my life a couple years ago and finally I had clarity ... so the lotus symbolizes ... clarity."

As for the butterfly, Tara told me that her butterflies "symbolize change and freedom."

Tara elaborated, saying that she brought three pictures in for reference [there's a monarch butterfly on her inner arm] and Christian "made it his own," in part by adding the design that represents the wind.

When I asked Tara how many tattoos she has, she said, "I lost count."

Thanks to Tara for sharing these stunning tattoos with us here on Tattoosday! Keep on skating with that positive mental attitude!

If you want to see more of Tara's ink, you can glimpse it on various videos on her YouTube channel here. She talks a lot about Vegan and Gluten-free recipes. I'm including one below that features her skating on the Shore Road promenade where I met her:
