Protest at #Toronto Maple Leaf Gardens

Ha, it wasn't a protest about the long NHL lockout, it was a protest against the Ontario Liberal Party and their Bill 115 as the delegate met to elect a new provincial leader at the Liberal leadership convention held inside the old home of the NHL Maple Leafs. Police brought their horses, protesters brought their flags and signs (and an elephant) while the media flew in some choppers for a birds eye view. Teachers schooled the politicians and asked them to write lines on the chalkboard after class - detention was served.

The 1:00 pm mass rally was organized by the Ontario Federation of Labour as part of a campaign to defend democratic and economic rights of workers and citizens. Long lines of buses,some of them even school buses, filled both sides of many nearby streets as many were bused in to participate in the event. The Saturday January 26, 2013 gathering outside the Liberal leadership convention quickly lost steam when the bell rang 3 pm.

A small group of Anarchists joined the protest: "Austerity is class war, eat the rich, feed the poor". Sounds plausible for a soylent green society of the future.

Police Horses to go to Washington

In honour of two #Toronto Police Service horses traveling to Washington DC for US President Obama's second inauguration, here is a look at some of the TPS mounted unit seen around our fair city.

Outside the US Consulate on University Avenue

Mounted unit horses Tecumseh and Honest Ed will be ridden by S/Insp Bill Wardle and Sgt Jim Patterson will take part in the January 21, 2013 celebration of the Obama's swearing in ceremony and re-election as the leader of the United States of America. His first inauguration four years ago set an attendance record with almost 1.8 million people attending.

Honest Ed was named by former Police Chief Julian Fantino in 2004, in honour of the late Ed Mirvish, and the horse participated in the 2008 inauguration . Tecumseh was named after a Shawnee leader which opposed the United States during Tecumseh's War and the War of 1812. Tecumseh died in battle in 1813.

The Toronto representatives, both horses and riders, are Canada's only law enforcement members to participate and they will join the parade as part of the Michigan Multi-Jurisdictional Mounted Police Drill Team. “We have been considered part of the Michigan unit for over five years, during which time we have participated in a number of cross-border events,” Wardle said, who was also Queen Elizabeth II's escort commader during her 2010 visit to Toronto, and he continued “It’s quite an honour for the Service to be represented in an event that’s so important to the world.”

Deadmau5 billboard

A cat busts out of a Deadmau5 mouse head in the "album title goes here" album cover advertisement that appeared over Yonge Street at Sunrise Records, across from Gould Street. The artist behind Deadmau5 is a #Toronto based electronic dance music performer named Joel Thomas Zimmerman. He recently proposed to the inked up Kat Von D on twitter - true love in 140 characters or less.

Next door is the American Apparel lady bending over sideways in a red, white and blue gymnastics outfit. I am not sure what billboard I like best; the cute mouse/cat on the left, cute girl dressed like a superhero on the right. And American Apparel wins.

#Toronto Argo Victory Parade

2012 Grey Cup Champions the Toronto Argonauts had a parade and a rally on Tuesday, November 27 along Bay Street and into Nathan Phillips Square. Argo Cheerleaders kept the crowd entertained as the parade ended at the north side of City Hall and the players made their way to centre stage. Individual players and coaches were introduced to the happy crowd as people waved free towels that were handed out at the celebration.

ROUTE: The parade will begin on Wellington St., west side at Yonge St., and travel westbound to Bay St. It will then turn onto Bay St. and head north. The parade will culminate with team introductions and Mayoral proclamation on stage at Nathan Phillips Square.

#Toronto Police Games

The 130th annual Toronto Police Amateur Athletic Association Games took place at Rogers Centre on Saturday October 13, 2012. The event has been held at Rogers Centre for 20 years and features athletics and police displays with proceeds going directly to the Toronto Police Widows and Orphans Fund.

"This year will feature an athletic portion including a highly competitive obstacle course, tug-of-war and relay race. Traditional components of the Police Games will also return with the annual March-Past parade of Police Officers; displays of police vehicles and equipment; and lots of live entertainment!"
