Desperately seeking Fall

I was extremely happy during the recent days of record high temperatures in #Toronto, then we get hit with tiny snow and dropping temperatures, with a little wind chill thrown in for good measure. The end of Fall doesn't really come until the Winter Solstice begins, which apparently, or maybe allegedly, is on December 21, 2012 at 6:12 am EST. I say it that way because I really don't trust that magical date, especially so close to the date when the real Santa speeds through the sky delivering presents to everyone that has been nice.

No, Fall is gone because the leaves in the trees have died and been blown down to the ground by Sandy, or they hang on for dear life, dried and blah, ready for the next big wind to come - like those in the little courtyard of the Church of the Holy Trinity tucked in beside the Eaton Centre.

When it starts to get near or below freezing that my friends is winter, and so winter is now. Here, for your viewing pleasure, is a look back at some of the lovely leaves found in the GTA that really told us to run; winter is coming.

He's coming to town

Red posters cover the windows of the Hudson Bay Company on Queen Street East across from the #Toronto Eaton Centre. The holiday tradition of Christmas window displays continues at the store and the detailed sets are being readied for the November 1, 2012 unveiling. Ho, Ho, Holy crap - it's almost winter!

I cannot face the coming snow (yes, the winter season is supposed to return to the normal setting: Harsh) even as the leaves turn colour and fall to the ground all around the city. Some winter events to look forward to include the Cavalcade of Lights November 17 and Winterlicious in January and February.

Niagara Falls in Fall

The famous tourist destination is almost perfect in Fall - the water roars, mist still drops on your face but the lines are smaller and the trees have a lot of colour. I just returned from a mini vacation in the Niagara Falls area, both on the Canadian and the American side of the Niagara Gorge, and it was a nice getaway. More things were still open on the Canadian side but booze is plentiful and cheap on the American side - so it was kind of a nice balance.

The Skylon Tower, on the right, is a great place to take photos of the fall. Dinosaurs and volcanoes are at the outdoor Dinosaur Adventure Golf course. See more of the Falls area after the jump.

Fall colours at the Scarborough Bluffs

The cold weather in #Toronto has meant that fall is here and that parking is now free along the beaches! That's right my friends, parking along the Lake Ontario municipal waterfront parks and beaches is free from October to April. Take advantage of the lack of crowds and check out the fall colours that are appearing at such places as the incredible Scarborough Bluffs and Bluffer Park - think about bringing a light winter coat and some gloves. The sumac leaves, above, seem the first to go a bright red as the fall season starts.

It is not peak fall colours yet but the show is still impressive

Fall colours in Haliburton

Peak fall colours are fast approaching and are brilliant in the Dorset area of Haliburton County. The Ontario Travel Fall Foliage Report shows only 50-60% of peak but they seem higher! As areas north of the GTA approach peak  fall colours we will also soon be seeing more colours in Toronto.

Matthew Shares Some Autumn Ink

Sometimes some people's tattoos are just destined for Tattoosday.

Case in point: this past July I was traversing the Brooklyn Bridge with family and some out of town friends. On the way down the bridge into Manhattan, a guy passed me walking toward Brooklyn. He had an amazing, colorful tattoo on his left arm. Under normal circumstances, I would have stopped him, but we were going different directions and the bridge was crowded.

It was a hot day, so we paused for some water at the bottom of the bridge before crossing into City Hall Park. There were seven of us in all and we were hanging by the Jacob Wrey Mould fountain when, who should I see, but the guy with the tattoo I so admired. Rather than crossing into Brooklyn, he had returned to Manhattan.

His name was Matthew and he was visiting from Utah. Check out his amazing tattoo:

It seemed appropriate to save this tattoo for the first full day of fall (I know it started yesterday, but technically not until 10:49 a.m. E.S.T.).

Matthew explained that this tattoo represents "where I've started [and] what I've grown to be."

He added,  "I got the colors because my birthday is in the fall ... so autumn colors, as well as, it looks more like a Dr. Seuss, so it's different than anyone else's tree tattoo." I couldn't agree more!

The artist is Craig Secrist at Ironclad Electric Tattooing in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Domenic Helps Tattoosday Usher in Autumn

We've saved this one for today, the first day of fall:

This half-sleeve of falling leaves belongs to Domenic, who I met in Penn Station back in early July.

He credited the artist Laura Usowski at Lovecraft Tattoo in Hamden, Connecticut. He says he wanted something representing fall and Laura designed the tattoo. She did a great job!

Thanks to Domenic for sharing this tattoo which we here think is a perfect tattoo for the first day of fall!
