Cube Works Gallery in the District

Discovering the #Toronto Historic Distillery District is something that takes time to explore with all the nooks and crannies of the exciting neighbourhood. Galleries and retail go brick to brick against bars and restaurants for your attention and to satisfy your cravings. Cube Works Gallery at 17 Trinity Street is just down from the main public square (You know the one with the big egg beater sculpture?) and the shop is chock full of items with 'a unique twist on modern art'.

Cube Works is named for the Rubik's cubes used in much of their art, especially the World record breaking 85,794 cubes used in the recent mosaic 'Skyline of Macau, China'  which measures over 13 feet high and over 200 feet wide. Their 'Hand of God' creation shown in the 2010 Nuit Blanche all night art event used over 12,000 cubes. Many stars also have cube portraits: Twiggy, Audrey Hepbrun and Andy Warhol to name a few.

Also interesting is the Crayola Crayon production of Popeye with over 1,000 crayons used in the work and they promise more to come. Randy Cooper has a series of human figures made from wire mesh available for sale.

The gallery highlights both local and international artists every month and in July abstract artist Lloyd Arbour will have some of his mixed media work will be displayed. So drop by and check it out. See more art after the jump.

Santa and Mrs Claus in #Toronto

The jolly, happy couple brought the festive season to the Distillery_TO during the continuing Lowe's Christmas Market. On Sunday the rain tried to keep away visitors but the warm fires and free booze samples brought them back - Ho Ho Ho! I was totally fooled by the cutie at top - that's not Santa, that's a dog in a Santa suit. Here is the real Santa.

The hip, red brick neighbourhood is always fun to visit, with so many events filling the pedestrian alleys. In winter the Xmas fun has music, carols and booze samples that can keep you occupied for several hours. On cold, damp days the fire pits provide some welcome heat. As we sat by the fire on the wet seats, leaning in towards the flames, you could see the steam leave our clothes.

Angel in the Distillery District

She definitely wasn't naughty, she is an angel after all, and spent her time meeting visitors to the #Toronto Christmas Market in the Historic Distillery District.

The lovely blond angel was just some of the excitement going on during the Lowes sponsored Christmas fun at the pedestrian friendly brick neighbourhood.

Lowe's Christmas Market Carolling

#Toronto voices sang out in World record attempt for the largest public carolling challenge in the historic Distillery District. Mill Street Brewery provided branded glasses and reusable LED candles for participants and donated $1 to the Daily Bread Food Bank for every person that joined in. As one of the best places in Toronto the Market brings out the best of the district. Nooks and crannies were filled with inviting chairs, vendors and plenty of adult beverages for purchase and sample - it's not known as the Distillery District for nothing!

Pamphlets were handed out with lyrics to the challenge songs: Let it Snow!, We Wish You a Merry Christmas, O Christmas Tree, The Twelve Days of Christmas, Jingle Bells, Deck the Halls, Silent Night, Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer and Santa Claus is Coming to Town. The sing-a-long was scheduled for Saturday, December 8, 2012 at 5 pm.

"This holiday season Toronto will once again celebrate the romance and magic of a traditional Christmas at Lowe's Toronto Christmas Market. Inspired by the Old World and influenced by the New, this free annual event captures all of the tradition, heritage and charm of a European Christmas Market, while showcasing hundreds of unique and local handcrafted products. Family friendly entertainment includes musicians, carolers and children's choirs."

Santa waits for the next child to find out what they want for Christmas

The challenge is to get the most carollers singing together in one place and the number to beat was 15,000! The Candy Cane Carollers led the crowd in singing traditional Christmas songs. The number of singers was reported as approximately 7,300, so South Korea's record didn't fall today. Organizers say they will try again next year.

A Minion says that the Market runs from November 30 to December 16, 2012. From noon to 9 pm Monday to Friday and 10 am to 9 pm on weekends.
